NANCY H. MCCORD, PSY.D., PC

LICENSED PSYCHOLOGIST

About

For more than 30 years I have been honored to journey with clients through a wide range of transitions, challenges, and adventures. I am based in Atlanta, Georgia but am also credentialed to provide telehealth in 39 states through PSYPACT.

Much of my work focuses on helping people create and sustain more intimate and fulfilling relationships and I draw most from therapeutic approaches that highlight the healing value of empathy. As a psychotherapist my first and most important task is to establish a relationship with you that is collaborative and worthy of your trust. All else flows from that foundation.

Psychotherapy has often been described as a type of shared mindfulness. For me, that means mindfully listening with my clients to the meanings and emotions embedded in their stories. Together we attend to the moment by moment emotional experiences that unfold in our meetings. When wisely attended to, emotions often shed light on how to best tend to ourselves and navigate our world. The capacity to identify, make sense of, safely express, and resolve emotions is essential for feeling more hopeful, alive, and at peace with ourselves.

People sometimes come to me for help with problematic emotional reactions or self-defeating behavioral patterns. My early years working with eating disorders have taught me how to draw upon cognitive-behavioral and mind-body oriented tools to create practical and meaningful change. I have found that the most lasting behavioral changes are rooted in a compassionate connection with our true self.

My approach to therapy is grounded in Attachment Theory (the study of how emotional bonds are formed and maintained throughout our life span), Self Psychology, and Humanistic Psychology. I have post-graduate training in techniques for addressing trauma and in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy.  I enjoy being in a profession where there is always more to learn and in the past couple of years I have completed Level 3 training in Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP). I also participated in a year-long teacher training for Cultivating Emotional Balance, a curriculum commissioned by the Dalai Lama which integrates secular contemplative practices with our current scientific understanding of emotion.

One of the advantages of being in the Atlanta area for so long is that I benefit from a network of trusted colleagues with whom I enjoy collaborating and consulting. Others have described me as warm, insightful, and as having a playful sense of humor.  When away from the office I enjoy time with my family and friends, bicycling, using photography as a tool for mindfulness, and romping outdoors with my rough collie.
